From clothing brands and gym wear to workwear and promotional apparel, DTF printing offers a versatile solution across a wide range of products and fabric types.

The Method

What is DTF printing

DTF stands for direct to film printing. It involves printing your design onto a specialist transfer film, coating it with a heat activated adhesive powder, then applying it to garments using heat and pressure.

Because the design is first created on film rather than applied directly to fabric, DTF works across a much wider range of materials than DTG — including synthetic fabrics, performance materials and blended textiles.

Full colour designs High detail prints All fabric types Small & medium runs No colour restrictions Flexible production
01
Design printed to film

Your artwork is printed onto a specialist DTF transfer film using pigment-based inks at high resolution.

02
Adhesive powder applied

A heat activated adhesive powder is applied to the printed film while the ink is still wet, then cured in an oven.

03
Heat pressed onto garment

The transfer is positioned on the garment and pressed with a heat press to bond the design to the fabric.

04
Film peeled & finished

The film is peeled away, leaving a clean, durable print bonded directly to the garment.

Why It Works

Why choose DTF printing

DTF sits between DTG and screen printing in terms of capability — and has unique advantages that neither can match.

Works on multiple materials

DTF can be applied to cotton, polyester, nylon, performance fabrics, blends and mixed materials. This makes it one of the most versatile printing methods available — suitable for garments that DTG simply cannot handle.

High detail prints

DTF prints reproduce complex artwork, fine lines, gradients and photographic detail with precision. Whether your design is a simple logo or a complex full colour graphic, DTF handles it cleanly.

No colour limitations

Full colour printing at no extra cost per colour. Unlike screen printing where each additional colour adds cost and complexity, DTF prints any design with unlimited colours in a single pass.

Flexible for small & medium runs

DTF offers a practical middle ground — more cost effective than DTG on medium runs, and more flexible than screen printing for mixed garment orders. Ideal for runs of 10–100 units across multiple designs.

Strong durability

DTF prints hold up well when applied correctly. The adhesive layer bonds the design firmly to the fabric, resisting cracking, peeling and wash degradation with proper care — producing a long-lasting result.

Fast turnaround

DTF transfers can be produced quickly and applied efficiently. Without the screen setup time of screen printing, DTF is one of the fastest methods for getting a quality print onto a garment.

Order Quantities

Minimum order quantity

DTF printing is a flexible option for detailed designs, mixed garment types and smaller production runs.

It works well when you need vibrant artwork, flexible garment choice and a lower minimum than screen printing.

What We Print

DTF printing on garments and products

We offer DTF printing across a wide range of garments. Because DTF works on most fabric types, we can produce prints on garments that other methods cannot handle.

T-shirt printing

DTF t-shirt printing for full colour designs on cotton, polyester and blended fabrics. Great for detailed artwork, fashion pieces and promotional t-shirts across Nottingham.

Hoodie printing

Flexible printing for merch and clothing brands. DTF hoodies produce clean, vibrant prints and are particularly useful for brands using blended cotton-polyester garments.

Sweatshirts

Clean everyday garments with detailed DTF prints. Works well on both cotton and poly-cotton sweatshirts, making it a versatile option for brand collections and branded apparel.

Workwear

Durable DTF application on workwear fabrics. Unlike DTG, DTF works on mixed-fabric workwear, giving trade businesses more flexibility in their branded clothing choices.

Performance & activewear

DTF's key advantage over DTG — it works on polyester and synthetic fabrics. Ideal for gym wear, sports kit and performance apparel that other printing methods cannot print onto reliably.

How It Works

How DTF printing works

A five-stage process from artwork to finished garment — clean, efficient and quality-checked at every stage.

01

Design printed onto film

Your artwork is printed in reverse onto a specialist PET transfer film using pigment-based DTF inks at high resolution. This stage captures all colour detail and fine artwork elements.

02

Adhesive applied & cured

A fine layer of heat activated adhesive powder is applied evenly over the wet ink on the film. The film then passes through an oven to cure, melting the powder into the ink surface and creating the bond layer.

03

Transfer heat pressed

The transfer film is positioned on the garment and pressed using a heat press at the correct temperature and pressure. The adhesive layer activates, bonding the design to the fabric fibres.

04

Film peeled away

After pressing, the film is peeled away — either hot or cold peel depending on the transfer type — leaving the design cleanly bonded to the garment surface.

05

Quality checked

Each garment is inspected for print quality, adhesion, colour accuracy and placement before being packed for dispatch. We only ship orders that meet our quality standard.

06

Ready for delivery

Orders are packaged and dispatched from our Nottingham facility. We ship nationwide and offer local collection for Nottingham-based clients.

The Bigger Picture

DTF printing for modern apparel production

DTF printing is one of the most flexible garment printing methods available today. It sits between DTG printing and screen printing Nottingham, offering a practical balance of quality, flexibility and accessibility that neither method provides alone.

For brands and businesses operating in a world where garment types vary, fabric compositions change and design complexity increases, DTF provides a solution that adapts to the requirements of modern apparel production. For larger bulk orders, screen printing is usually the most cost effective option. For premium stitched logos on workwear and caps, custom embroidery is the strongest choice.

Detailed designs

DTF reproduces complex, full colour artwork with precision. Brands with intricate logos, graphic designs or photo-based prints benefit from DTF's ability to transfer high detail onto a wide range of fabrics.

Small and medium runs

DTF is accessible at low quantities without the setup costs of screen printing. Brands testing designs, resellers fulfilling mixed orders and businesses needing occasional branded clothing all benefit from this flexibility.

Mixed garment orders

Unlike screen printing, DTF transfers can be produced in advance and applied to different garment types and colours as needed. This makes it ideal for mixed orders where sizes, styles and colours vary across a single run.

Common Questions

DTF printing FAQs

DTF stands for direct to film printing. The process involves printing your design onto a specialist transfer film, applying a heat activated adhesive, then pressing the transfer onto a garment. DTF works on most fabric types and produces full colour, high detail prints without the minimum order requirements or setup costs of screen printing.

Yes. Project Print provides DTF printing from our facility in Nottingham. We serve clients across Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, the East Midlands and offer nationwide delivery on all orders. We also offer local collection for Nottingham-based clients.

DTF prints are very durable when applied correctly. The adhesive layer bonds the design firmly to the fabric, making it resistant to cracking, peeling and fading with normal use. With correct wash care (inside out, 30–40°C, no tumble dry), DTF prints maintain their quality well. For heavy daily use or industrial washing, screen printing remains the most durable option.

The minimum order quantity for DTF printing is 10 units. Because there is no screen setup required, smaller quantities are accessible at reasonable cost. Contact us with your requirements for a quote tailored to your order size.

Standard DTF turnaround is 3–7 working days from artwork approval. Rush turnaround may be available for urgent orders — contact us with your deadline before placing your order and we will confirm what is achievable.

DTG (direct to garment) prints ink directly onto the fabric using an inkjet process. It works best on 100% cotton in light colours. DTF (direct to film) creates a transfer that is heat-pressed onto the garment and works on virtually any fabric type including polyester, blends and performance materials. DTF tends to produce more vibrant results on dark garments and works across a wider range of fabric types.

DTF printing works on most fabric types including 100% cotton, polyester, nylon, poly-cotton blends, performance fabrics and synthetic materials. This makes it significantly more versatile than DTG, which is restricted to cotton. If you have a specific garment type, contact us and we will confirm compatibility before production.

Yes. We offer trade DTF printing for designers, agencies, clothing brands and print resellers. Trade clients receive dedicated per-unit pricing, priority production and consistent quality across all orders. Contact us to discuss trade account terms for your volumes.
